Math Department Scholarships

The Math Department offers eight distinct scholarships, targeting various groups of Humboldt Mathematics majors. By filling out a single application, you will be considered for each of the scholarships.

Brief description of scholarships:

  • Elmo Moore Scholarship for Native American or first-time students with financial need;
  • Harry S Kieval Scholarship for an outstanding rising Senior in the program- $1,000;
  • Harry S. Kieval Transfer Scholarship for outstanding students transferring from a two-year institution to be a Math major at Humboldt- $5,000;
  • Travis Jepsen Scholarship for students with a demonstrated need and a 3.0 GPA- 3 @ $3,000;
  • Michael Tucker Scholarship for Junior or Senior Math majors- $3,000;
  • Robert S Chamber Scholarship for students with 3.0 or higher GPA- $1,000;
  • Orval M Klose Scholarship for a Sophomore, Junior or Senior Math major with a 3.0 GPA and demonstrated need- $500; and
  • Latika Patel Graduate Scholarship for full-time undergraduate or graduate Mathematics majors with a 3.0 GPA- $1,000.

Math Department scholarship recipients will remain a student in good academic standing throughout the year and make consistent progress toward graduation. Amounts and numbers of scholarships are estimates, dependent on funding. Upload all requested materials to be considered for all eight scholarships.

Supplemental Questions
  1. 1. A list of all college-level mathematics courses taken. The list should be in chronological order and include semester, year, course name, course number, institution, instructor, and grade. Freshman applicants should list courses taken in their last two years of high school.
  2. 2. A list of any extracurricular math-related activities while in college or high school. This could include research or independent study, conferences or workshops attended, internships, tutoring, grading, contest participation, math club activity, etc. The list should be in chronological order and include date, location, name of activity, supervisor or advisor, and brief description of activity
  3. 3. A short essay (no more than one page) describing why mathematics is important to you personally and why receiving a scholarship would help you with your academic and career goals.
